It has been awhile since I've posted.
A long nightmare is interrupted. Control of the US has returned to the more pragmatic arm of big business, the Democrats.
Rumsfeld has fled and, as the UK Telegraph has so eloquently put it, Bush's hell has just begun.
The Democrats have a lot of cleaning up to do and a historical opportunity. If the Democrats enact laws preventing gerrymandering and electronic vote fraud they will win tremendous long-term political capital and will help prevent future bloodless coups. Hopefully they will not sit on their hands, preserving Bush's legislative assaults on democracy and the rule of law. If Democrats choose to preserve Bush initiatives such as legalized torture and domestic surveillance then considerable noise should be made. I'd suggest that Democrats start by allowing media access to the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay (then freeing them).
Provided Bush doesn't unleash the hounds of martial law, things should settle down. If, however, another 9/11 happens or Iran suddenly "attacks", I won't be completely surprised.
In my observations of the Bush regime, I've guessed that plan A was winning a largely rigged election, plan B is martial law (justified by a staged terrorist or military attack), and plan C is Paraguay. Plan A has failed.
