The administrators of the successful multiplayer online game Kingdom of Loathing have been forced to call it quits due to rising bandwidth and administration costs and, a minor but contributing factor, pressure from American neo-prohibitionist organizations.
In an email blast to longtime members of the colorful game, Administrator Zach "Jick" Johnson admitted that he and Josh "Mr. Skullhead" Nite had reached the end of their ropes financially. Nite has been working with Electronic Arts on a plan to create a 3D version of the game that will be released on PC and console platforms. Johnson hopes to recharge his batteries by creating a series of novels based on the game.
The domain has been sold to Site Pimp, an online asset reseller, and various parties such as Yahoo and Google have, according to Johnson, expressed interest in the site's engine. The Marin Institute for the Prevention of Alcohol and Other Drug Problems condoned the game's shutdown, having frequently targetted Kingdom of Loathing as glorifying consumption of alcohol to youth.
