As a man of youth I enjoyed the heyday of velcro-laced shoes! This did not last, however, and after the shoes became unfashionable I would, on the odd occasion, happen upon velcro-laced shoes that didn't look clown and I would horde them up.

A year or so ago I happened upon some shoes with rubber-ish laces and found these to be handy. Now I find that some company has come up with a new lacing alternative for use with any kind of shoes! These beasts, called Speed Laces, are a little dear at $9 US a pop, but sound like good ones. They consist of a lace that you cinch, rather than tie, and notch things that you screw into the shoe's eyelets (the web site includes "installation instructions"!).
